SPACEPORT AMERICA CUP
THUNDERSTROICK IV
SEP. '17 - JUL. '18
OUTLINE
Thunderstroick IV was the name of our rocket built for the 2018 Spaceport America Cup. The SA Cup is the world's largest intercollegiate rocket conference and competition. Over 1,500 students gather each year from 100+ universities and 10+ countries. We compete in the 30,000' student research and designed category. This means that we design, develop, and construct our rocket ourselves, including the mixing of our own propulsion formula for our rocket motor.
STRUCTURES
For Thunderstroick IV, my main contribution to the rocket was in the structures department. We constructed the main air frame of our rocket out of fiberglass that we laid up around a custom aluminum mandrill to give us a very even cylindrical shape. We cut our fins from G10 fiberglass and did a tip-to-tip carbon fiber layup (pictured) to strengthen the fins further.
